Story Mode Walkthrough

Halloween: The Game's campaign runs as six playable stages — the Smith's Grove Prologue plus Chapters 1 through 5. This walkthrough follows the required route through each one: the objective that actually advances the chapter, the point where the chapter is ready to be left behind, and the optional work that is much cheaper to clean up on a replay.

THE ONE RULE THAT KEEPS RUNS SHORT
Every chapter of the campaign can look bigger than it is. Residents wander, skull icons glow, weapons sit on the ground, and collectibles hide in rooms you have already cleared — and none of that is the objective. The route that keeps a first clear moving is simple: when the HUD names a new destination, target or exit, go there.
A near-objective kill, an optional execution or a character standing within reach can all be useful without being what advances the chapter. Treat the moment the objective marker moves as the hand-off: whatever you were doing in that area is now cleanup, and cleanup is what chapter replay is for.
If you feel lost, check what changed on the objective line. The campaign almost never hides the next step — it hides the fact that the previous step is already finished.
CHAPTER ORDER
The six stages run in this order, and each one can be replayed on its own from the chapter select:
| # | Chapter | What the route is actually about |
|---|---|---|
| — | Prologue — Escape From Smith's Grove | Lower the gates and cut the facility power to open a way out of the sanitarium. |
| 1 | The Road To Haddonfield | Rabbit in Red is the anchor; work the required target chain and leave when it resolves. |
| 2 | Main Street | Get the mask, follow the named targets, then finish the cemetery sequence at Judith Myers' grave. |
| 3 | Returning Home | The Myers house flashback comes first; the present-day hunt and the escape prompt follow. |
| 4 | The Babysitters | Let the Wallace House chain develop in the right order; the chapter resolves when Loomis arrives. |
| 5 | Into the Shadows | Rebuild Michael, survive the police search and take an available exit out of Haddonfield. |
The full picture of what story mode is — the premise, the narration, the reward layer — is on the story mode page. This page is only about the route.
PROLOGUE — ESCAPE FROM SMITH'S GROVE
The Prologue teaches the whole kit at once: stalking, grabbing, executions and the way orderlies react when Michael gets close or leaves a body where it can be found. For the opening stretch, following the obvious path works — move with the other inmates, take the stairs, and use the first orderly to learn how a stalk meter fills into a grab.
The transition point is when the objective becomes getting the gates open. From there the chapter is a two-step: reach the gate area, then deal with the facility power so the way out unlocks — the power box sits off to one side of that approach. Remaining orderlies are no longer the mission. Once the exit is live, take it rather than making another lap of the grounds.
CHAPTER 1 — THE ROAD TO HADDONFIELD
Michael reaches the roadside bar and the Rabbit in Red becomes the anchor for the chapter. The opening fight is a short brawl outside the building — the two bikers go down with whatever sharp objects are lying around, but watch the swinging baseball bat, which will cost you health if you stand in it.
Inside, the bartender runs and the remaining bikers press the attack. You do not have to clear the building; the chapter only requires that you get through the armed biker. Shape Jump is taught during the chase that follows, and the route out of Chapter 1 is a pursuit: follow the red noise pings through the area, close on the fleeing target, and finish it to resolve the chapter. Once the sequence resolves, leave — the parking lot and the bar interior hold more targets than the story ever asks for.
CHAPTER 2 — MAIN STREET
Main Street hands Michael several systems at once and makes every nearby skull icon look important. It isn't. The required sequence is:
- Get Michael's mask. This comes early, in the commercial stretch, and unlocks the chapter's identity.
- Work the named targets. Follow the targets the objective actually points at rather than the ones you can physically reach.
- Move to the cemetery. The decisive hand-off is the shift toward Judith Myers' gravestone — once that marker appears, stop reopening shops and go finish the grave sequence.
- Return the required item to the car to close the chapter.
The tempting mistake here is treating the mask and the targets as a reason to sweep every interior. They aren't — the cemetery objective is the chapter's spine, and everything else is replay work.
CHAPTER 3 — RETURNING HOME
Returning Home looks like an open neighborhood and opens as a corridor. Go to the Myers house first — before hunting anything in the surrounding streets — and complete the childhood flashback inside it: circle to the back of the house, enter, move upstairs, put on the mask and continue through to Judith. The interior route is short and there is no reason to treat it as a combat sandbox.
Only after the house sequence returns Michael to the present does the chapter widen into a genuine hunt. That second half is where houses, residents, weapons and environmental interactions make the map look like it wants a full sweep. It doesn't — prioritize the required special targets, and when the objective changes to an escape prompt, that is the chapter telling you to leave. Crossing back through several houses to finish survivors at that point is optional cleanup.
CHAPTER 4 — THE BABYSITTERS
The Babysitters is the one chapter where moving too fast is the mistake. The Wallace House carries the main event chain, and the chain cares about the order characters reach their states: Annie belongs earlier in the sequence, Bob and Lynda need time to get where the chapter wants them, and Laurie only becomes the active target later on.
The reliable approach is to stop asking who Michael can reach right now and start watching which character the objective has actually moved to. Stay close enough to follow the Wallace House chain as it changes, but do not interrupt a character just because the game lets you — reaching the right person early can stall the sequence rather than advance it. When Laurie becomes the target, follow that thread until Loomis arrives and resolves the chapter.
CHAPTER 5 — INTO THE SHADOWS
The finale opens on the back foot. Expect to spend the first stretch rebuilding Michael rather than fighting: work back toward Bloodthirst tier 3 on safer, isolated targets before you test the police, because that is when Shape Jump is comfortable to use again and crossing the map stops being a risk.
- Rebuild away from the crowd. A dense knot of officers is the worst place to regain strength. Drift to quieter angles and let the meter climb.
- Respect detainment. Chapter 5 is where the authorities can actually end a run. Long, exposed street fights are far worse value here than they were earlier in the campaign.
- Use Blackout against flashlights. When several beams are covering the route you want, cutting the lights and repositioning beats forcing through the group.
- Leave when an exit appears. The moment the chapter stops asking Michael to hunt and offers a way out of Haddonfield, that is the objective. There is no requirement to find every possible exit on one run.
Which exit you take is also how the campaign's endings are decided — the railroad, the cornfield and the sewer each produce a different closing sequence. See endings explained for how to reach each one.
RECENT STORY MODE FIXES
Patch 1.0.2 repaired several singleplayer objectives that were not tracking as written. If a chapter challenge felt impossible during launch week, retry it on the current build:
- Prologue Challenge 6 was not being tracked properly.
- Chapter 2 Challenge 6 — certain executions no longer count as alerting someone.
- Chapter 4 Challenge 2 — Lynda no longer leaves the bedroom immediately after Bob is killed.
- Chapter 5 Challenge 1 — the flashlights no longer have to be completely drained to complete it.
CHAPTER REPLAY AND CLEANUP
Story mode does not expect a first clear to also be a completionist run, and the chapter select makes that official. Missed a Prologue challenge? Replay Smith's Grove. Left a Main Street objective behind? Jump straight back into Main Street. Chapter select also lets you return directly to a later chapter for its optional exits without replaying the earlier stages — which is exactly how the alternate endings are meant to be collected.
Two things are worth knowing before you start a cleanup pass. Recording collectibles are the campaign's most missable content, so use the Loomis Logs route rather than hunting blind. And optional objectives often ask you to play a chapter differently from a normal first clear — a zero-alert movement route, for instance, is the opposite of the obvious sweep — so read the challenge text before loading in.
Campaign XP counts toward the same progression tracks as multiplayer, and clearing every singleplayer challenge unlocks a legendary Michael look. Cleanup runs are progression runs.
Story Mode Walkthrough FAQ
How many chapters does Halloween: The Game story mode have?
Six playable stages: the Smith's Grove Prologue plus five numbered chapters — The Road To Haddonfield, Main Street, Returning Home, The Babysitters and Into the Shadows.
Do I have to complete everything in a chapter before it ends?
No. Chapters advance on the required objective alone. Optional kills, executions and collectibles can all be left for a chapter replay, which is why following the HUD marker is faster than sweeping every area you pass through.
Can I replay a single chapter?
Yes. Every stage, including the Prologue, can be replayed on its own, and you can return directly to a later chapter without redoing the earlier ones.
How do I get the different endings?
Leave Haddonfield by a different route at the end of Chapter 5 — the railroad, the cornfield or the sewer. Replay Chapter 5 rather than the whole campaign.
What is the hardest chapter in story mode?
Into the Shadows is the tightest, because Michael has to rebuild his strength while police pressure is at its highest and detainment is a real threat. Rebuild toward Bloodthirst tier 3 before you commit to the crowded areas.
