Halloween: The Game is a 1v4 asymmetrical horror sandbox built in Unreal Engine 5 — and officially, an unusually deep one. Beyond the core stalk-and-escape loop, IllFonic has confirmed four progression tracks, a rollable perk card system, passive and progressive challenges, and full cosmetic customization. This gameplay guide organizes everything confirmed so far into one systems reference.

01THE CORE LOOP
IllFonic describes multiplayer as a "quintessential Slasher Simulator" with a sandbox at its heart. Matches open slow and cautious, then ratchet up as the body count climbs: residents arm themselves, police patrols thicken, and the match culminates in "an inevitable face off with The Shape." Design director Jordan Mathewson: "The actions of players, especially Michael, become the driving force of terror throughout each match as intensity grows."
- Killer side: stalk and execute Special Targets with Michael's kit; manage light and darkness; survive escalating armed resistance.
- Hero side: explore points of interest, rescue NPC residents, make police calls, loot and escape through randomized routes.
- The world: dynamic map features, life-like NPC interactions and player abilities power the "living, breathing game world" of 1978 Haddonfield.
02LOADOUTS
Both sides build loadouts before a match:
| Side | Loadout elements |
|---|---|
| Michael Myers | Two fixed starting traits (Killer Sense, Shape Jump) · three selectable abilities (e.g. Reality Tear, Blackout, Detection Pulse) · starting weapon · Killer Skin and Tints. |
| Civilians | Character (unique stats + signature trait) · outfit, hair/headwear, eyewear, makeup/blemishes · starting items · a Perk Deck drawn from your collected Perk Cards. |
03PERK CARDS & DECKS
The civilian perk economy is the most distinctive metagame system confirmed so far:
- Earn Perk Points by completing matches.
- Roll for Perk Cards — cards grant gameplay boosts of varying levels. Spend more Perk Points on a roll to improve the odds of higher-rarity cards.
- Upgrade cards temporarily — Perk Points can level an owned card for a set number of matches.
- Build Perk Decks from the collection and equip one to each civilian loadout.
Because rolls are randomized, your deck quality grows with match volume. Early on, spend modestly and bank points; once you know which rarities exist and how upgrades behave in the live build, roll deep. (Deck-specific tier lists will land here after Sep 8 verification.)
04FOUR PROGRESSION LEVELS
XP from matches and singleplayer feeds four separate progression tracks, each with its own prestige:
| Track | Earned by | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Profile Level | All XP regardless of role | Cosmetics, challenges, profile card items |
| Killer Level | Terrorizing Haddonfield as Michael | New Michael abilities, skins, executions |
| Civilian Level | Play as each civilian character | Character unlocks, starting items, cosmetics |
| Weapon Level | Kills with specific equipped weapons as Michael | Weapon tints, executions, challenge tiers |
Dedicated players can prestige any of the four tracks at max level to chase extra rewards.
05CHALLENGES
Three challenge families sit on top of progression:
- Passive Challenges — divided into Killer and Civilian categories, auto-tracked regardless of which character you select.
- Progressive Challenges — tied to specific civilians, Michael Skins and weapon types; completed in succession for rewards.
- Singleplayer Challenges — optional objectives in each of the story mode's six chapters, unlocking alternate outfits and unique cosmetics — including a legendary Michael look for clearing all of them.
IllFonic counts "100s of challenges" across the three systems, covering singleplayer, private AI matches and online 1v4.
06CUSTOMIZATION & PROFILE CARDS
Cosmetics split into character appearance and player identity. Michael gets Killer Skins and Tints; civilians get outfits with multiple tints, hair/headwear, eyewear and makeup/blemishes. Hundreds of cosmetic items are confirmed at launch across both sides.
Outside matches, Player Profile Cards are built from earnable Profile Icons, Backgrounds and Titles — dozens of options that display in online multiplayer.
07WHERE SYSTEMS APPLY
Progression and challenges apply across all three ways to play: the singleplayer story mode, private matches against AI, and online 1v4 matchmaking. Singleplayer-specific unlockables (story items, collectibles, alternate outfits and the legendary Michael look) are earned only in the campaign.
Launch platforms: PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 8, 2026. The game is Windows-only on PC, requires 16 GB RAM and 45 GB of SSD storage (see the full system and purchase notes).
Gameplay FAQ
Is Halloween: The Game multiplayer or singleplayer?
